Back to School Alabama 2022: New Charter Schools Set to Open
Wednesday, August 10, 2022TWO NEW ALABAMA CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE OPENING THIS SCHOOL YEAR ALONG WITH TWO CONVERSION SCHOOLS PREVIOUSLY RUN BY MONTGOMERY COUNTY THAT WILL REOPEN AS CHARTERS.
Public charter schools are tuition-free, privately managed public schools. Currently, Alabama has two types of public charters: Conversion charter schools are existing public schools that are converted into charters and have independent school boards, and start-up charter schools are new public schools established by a non-profit organization.
ALABAMA AEROSPACE AND AVIATION HIGH SCHOOL (AAHS), A NEW, FREE PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL DEDICATED TO EDUCATING THE AVIATION AND AEROSPACE LEADERS OF TOMORROW, IS SET TO OPEN ITS DOORS ON AUGUST 22.
The aviation-focused public charter school curriculum will be aligned to meet the industry standards. In addition to hands-on, experiential instruction, AAHS will provide clearly-defined pathways for students to enter aviation and aerospace careers.

In 2015, SB45, more commonly known as the Alabama School Choice and Student Opportunity Act, passed both chambers on partisan lines, with zero Democrats voting in support of the bill. The Act created the Alabama Public Charter School Commission (APCSC) which intends to provide all children in the state with high quality education outside of the traditional public school setting.
Bessemer Land Innovative Aviation High School
Thursday, April 21, 2022ALABAMA AVIATION AND AEROSPACE HIGH SCHOOL WILL OPEN ITS DOORS FOR THE FIRST TIME ON AUGUST 28.
Founder Reuben Morris says the charter school already has 75 students enrolled in its inaugural class and is on its way to filling all 130 available slots for incoming freshmen. Classes will begin at the former Bessemer High School – currently owned by the Foundation of Life Ministries – location this fall, and later this year, they will break ground on a new 60,000-square-foot facility at Bessemer Municipal Airport.
